Authorities in Peru have recaptured a prisoner more than a year after he escaped from jail by leaving his twin brother in his place.

The inmate, a man named Alexander Delgado, had been serving 16 years for child sexual abuse and robbery, when he was visited by his twin, Giancarlo.

Alexander drugged his brother, changed into his clothes and walked out of the jail, the BBC reported. Prison authorities were later able to confirm Giancarlo's identity by taking his fingerprints.

"It's unbelievable - in 12 years nobody had escaped from Ancón I", former justice minister Marisol Pérez Tello remarked. Giancarlo was initially put under arrest under suspicion that he had aided and abetted his brother, but was subsequently cleared of charges.

Thirteen months went by and there was no sign of Alexander anywhere.

Alexander Delgado spent 13 months on the run after drugging his twin brother and leaving him in his prison cell.

In a statement, Peru's Ministry of Interior confirmed Alexander Jheferson Delgado Herrera was arrested in the city of Callao on Monday (local time) despite attempts to evade police.

"This relative was detained instead of him, but today Delgado Herrera has already been arrested".

He will now be moved to a high-security prison, the BBC reported. "In addition, the conditions of detention of many detainees are excessively severe, as they are practically not allowed to spend time in the yard nor to do physical exercise".
