Mike Shula returning to National Football League as Giants' offensive coordinator

Mike Shula

Shula was the Panthers' offensive coordinator for five seasons.

Fired by the Carolina Panthers from his position as the NFL team's offensive coordinator on January 9, Mike Shula is returning to the league in the same position with the New York Giants.

NFL Network reported on Tuesday morning that new NY coach Pat Shurmur had hired Shula as the Giants' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2018 season.

For the Giants, it's about trying to squeeze more out of a 37-year-old Eli Manning in 2018 and developing young quarterbacks like Davis Webb and a potential No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft.

The New York Post reported that Shula would put together the offensive game plan, but he would not be the play-caller for the Giants' offense.

NFL Network's Kim Jones was first to report Shula's hire.

Shula was sacked after the Panthers' 31-26 Wild Card round loss to the Saints this past season and despite being an offensive-minded coach, Gettleman never considered Shula as a potential head coaching candidate, instead interviewing Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Stefanski was passed over for the coordinator job in Minnesota but the Vikings denied the Giants' request to interview him for their position. Shurmur, just fired as head coach of the Browns, interviewed for that job which eventually went to Shula, who had been the Panthers' quarterbacks coach the previous two seasons.

The Giants offense was crippled by injuries in 2017 and finished 21st in the league in total offense, two spots behind the Panthers. He worked with recently hired general manager Dave Gettleman when both were with Carolina. Those four years away from the National Football League were spent as the head coach of Alabama from 2003-2006.

Shula, 52, is the son of Don Shula, the NFL's all-time winningest coach. He doesn't have an extensive coaching resume (six years) and has no experience working with quarterbacks.
