Missing from NY mountain, skier found at airport in CA

Constantinos

After a massive six-day search, a skier who went missing in NY has now been found safe almost 3,000 miles away in Sacramento.

State police said Tuesday that Constantinos "Danny" Filippidis of Toronto, Canada, was located alive and in good health in Sacramento, California.

Officers said Filippidis appeared dazed and determined there was a medical issue.

Search crews deploy on Whiteface Mountain.

"He wasn't able to give direct answers", Ramagnano said. Police say the circumstances of the case are under investigation. After the ski center closed at 4 p.m., his friends found a bag with his shoes in the lodge and his vehicle in the parking lot, but they couldn't find him.

"I'm told that he still had the same clothing that he was skiing in and the authorities seemed to indicate that it looked like he had been in those clothes since he had been missing".

"Asked if Filippidis has a history of mental illness, Ramagnano said he didn't know", the CBC reported.

Constantinos "Danny" Filippidis, 49, was reported missing after being last seen on February 7 at Whiteface Mountain during an annual ski trip with seven other colleagues.

"The person who was skiing with him was feeling worn out, he wanted to take a rest, he didn't want to ski anymore", Ramagnano said.

It did disrupt operations at Whiteface, Lundin said. "To see the pain in their eyes - I'm glad that they have (Danny) back", he said.

"We were quite concerned, and I had discussions with some of our peer support people on exactly what we could do for our members who were skiing with him", Ramagnano said.

A widespread search mission saw hundreds of volunteers spend nearly 7,000 hours scaling steep and icy terrain.

It seems baffling that someone could go missing in a resort area for almost a week, but state Forest Ranger Captain John Streiff says the search area includes a big part of a snow-covered mountain.

Ramagnano called the response from fellow firefighters "tremendous", with about 100 volunteering to aid in the search efforts.

SARNAK posted on Facebook Tuesday that its volunteers spent a total of 109.5 hours on this search.

In his statement, Pegg thanked "all those who participated in the search" for Filippidis. Lundin said the response from the Toronto fire community has been tremendous.

Searchers also put out the call for video footage from anyone who was skiing in the area Filippidis was last seen.

"I saw guys crawling on their hands and knees digging into the snow", Geiling said.

The two are expeditionary studies majors at their college and received emails about joining the search for the lost skier.
