United Plane Lands in Hawaii After Engine Cover Breaks Off Mid-Flight

United Plane Lands in Hawaii After Engine Cover Breaks Off Mid-Flight

A flight from San Francisco to Honolulu made an emergency landing mid-flight Tuesday.

The airlines in a statement said that the pilots followed all necessary protocol and made an emergency landing.

Photos taken by passengers show exposed metal and wiring surrounded by tattered flaps of the damaged covering. It was delivered new to United in January 1996.

"There was a loud bang. and then the plane really started shaking", passenger Allison Sudiacal, who was traveling with her husband, her 4-month-old son and her parents-in-law, told NBC affiliate KHNL of Honolulu.

But, Haddad was able to make light of the situation and posted an image of himself holding an in-flight manual with the caption: "I don't see anything about this in the manual".

The plane landed safely at about 1:02 p.m., with Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting personnel standing by as a precaution. A piece of the plane can also be seen shaking in the clip.

They (the pilots) let us know that we had to brace for impact in case there was a rough landing.

One woman on board described the "scariest flight of my life" after the airliner landed safely at Honolulu. She added that the flight UA1175 crew "did a great job" in guiding passengers through the "scary" situation. It said it would investigate the incident, as did the National Transportation Safety Board.

Airline officials were unable to immediately say whether the engine on the Boeing 777 aircraft continued to function after the cowling came off. "The aircraft taxied to the gate and passengers deplaned normally", the statement read.
