United States Hockey Team Allows Slovenians to Believe in Miracles

Slovenia drew within one about five minutes into the final period and then dialed up the heat.

Jan Mursak scored the tying goal with 1:37 left in the third period and the victor in overtime as Slovenia rallied to stun Team USA in the Olympic opener for both teams.

"I'm happy I was able to score today and help the team", Mursak said after the game, according to the International Ice Hockey Federation. Greenway will be the first African American to compete on a U.S. Olympic hockey team.

Brian O'Neill and Jordan Greenway scored as the United States of America built a 2-0 lead.

Slovenia had begun to tilt the ice toward the United States end, after they were out-shot for most of the first two periods, as the Americans were mostly the aggressors.

With captain Brian Gionta off for tripping, the USA got a couple of scares when Slovenia hit the post early on the power play and then nearly scored moments later.

Kroselj made a handful of quality saves to keep Slovenia in the game, and Zapolski had to do the same in the second period, stopping Urbas on a one-timer with Greenway in the box and the USA on the penalty kill.

Blaz Gregorc, who had a goal and an assist for Slovenia, fired shot on goal from the point.

The big center wheeled to his left, pirouetted, carried the puck along with him through the rotation and fired it cleanly behind Zapolski.

Mursak, who now plays for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, was selected by the Red Wings in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Draft.

In Wednesday's game, the US got goals from Brian O'Neill and Boston University's Jordan Greenway.

"Hopefully, we can start looking to the next game and surprise somebody else". After four seasons with the AHL Griffins, he made his Red Wings debut in the 2010-11 season.

Mursak played 25 games for Detroit in 2011-12 and two more in 2012-13.
