Who is the youngest American gold medal victor in Winter Olympics history?

Shaun White Stirs Up Chaos at the Men's Halfpipe Event- Winter Olympics

Over the last four years, White has found himself pushed by competitors like Hirano and James.

White scored 97.75 on his final run to pip Japan's Ayumu Hirano as he claimed his third Olympic gold and his country's 100th.

But Hirano went in front in run two with a score of 95.25, which included back-to-back 1440s - two consecutive jumps spinning through 1440 degrees - seen as one of the hardest tricks in the sport.

White becomes the first snowboarder ever to win three Olympic gold medals and is the first American man to win gold medals at three Olympic Winter Games.

Meanwhile, American alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin is looking for her first gold medal in the women's slalom.

"I was so overwhelmed with happiness, I've been through so much to get here".

"Oh man, that was very bad and wonderful at the same time", he said. "I knew I did a great ride and I was proud of that and I could walk away with my head high, but when they announced my score and Id won, it crippled me", he said.

While training for Pyeongchang in New Zealand in October, White crashed on the lip of the halfpipe and suffered serious facial injuries which required 62 stitches.

"Today I did not execute fully because it is qualification".

Team USA are threatening to clean up in snowboarding in South Korea, winning all four competitions so far.

White, a comparative veteran and snowboardings biggest star, was in ominous form in qualifying on Tuesday as he topped the standings with 98.50.

"Man, that was very bad and awesome at the same time", said White, speaking about his long wait for the score after his final run.

"I knew I had it in me to do it", said White. "My fourth Olympics. Thank you, Im feeling blessed".

Women's soccer player Kelly O'Hara, a World Cup and Olympic victor was clearly moved by White's celebratory tears.
