Woman suffering from rare disease, wakes with British accent

Michelle has now come to terms with her new voice

The mom (or "mummy", as one of her daughters now calls her) and former Texas beauty queen has had three accent changes in the past, she told ABC15. For the past couple of years, Myers has gone to sleep with blinding headaches, waking up with different accents - Irish, Australian, and British. But a British accent has lingered for two years now. "They send in the psychiatrist at the hospital and make sure you're not a loon", the 45-year-old said, via WTOL.

In Myers's case, doctors noted her case was likely caused by a side effect of a hemiplegic migraine, which produces symptoms that are similar to a stroke, reported Fox News.

Rather than picking up the accent while studying overseas, the mum of seven suffers from a rare medical condition diagnosed as Foreign Accent Syndrome - a condition usually associated with neurological damage.

According to the NHS, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a rare condition that affects connective tissue and results in skin that bruises easily and loose unstable joints.

Myers spends time with her seven kids wondering when the sound of her voice will ever change.

A United States woman woke up one morning with a British accent and has had it ever since due to a rare medical condition.

According to experts in the field, what she's suffering from is a very real thing and not fabricated in the least.

FAS is extremely rare and usually appears as a outcome of a stroke, brain damage, and in Meyers' case, underlying medical issues.

She has been to the hospital more times than she can count and the stack of medical records she keeps in the house says she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

People considered her a lunatic at first.

Since then, researchers have published more than 100 case studies of FAS.

While having an accent change may not seem like a big deal, Myers is saddened by the way her condition has affected her life. "I feel like a different person. We just want to be taken seriously", she said.

On an unlucky day in 1941, at the height of World War II, a piece of shrapnel pierced the brain of a Norwegian woman known as Astrid L. The injury occurred during a raid in her German-occupied country, and when she regained consciousness, she spoke with the accent of the enemy.

"Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological", Myers was quoted as saying in the report. "I try to tell people, I'm still me".
