Jeremy Corbyn leaves personal tribute to rough sleeper who died near Parliament

It was estimated that there were around 4,751 rough sleepers on a single night in autumn 2017

A homeless man was found dead near the entrance of Britain's Parliament building in London on Wednesday, prompting government officials to decry the country's growing homeless rate.

Flowers and a card signed by Jeremy Corbyn have been laid where a rough sleeper was found dead a stone's throw from Parliament.

Another card left at the scene "from all the staff of the leader of the Labour Party" called the man's death "a tragic loss".

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said: "No one should ever have to sleep rough".

Jeremy Corbyn, whose team are thought to have helped the man in the past, said the "powerful can't keen walking by on the other side".

The Labour leader said it is time MPs took up the moral challenge to properly house everyone as the tragic case unfolded next to Westminster.

A number of MPs spoke out on Twitter after news of the man's death emerged, with shadow education secretary Angela Rayner saying: "Whatever the circumstances it's a awful tragedy that somebody ends their days like this, the govt must do more to combat homelessness".

A man who died in Westminster tube station on Wednesday was a Portuguese former model who was trying to find work as a waiter, according to a central London homeless charity.

Mr Lammy said he wonders "every day" when he goes to Westminster if Cabinet ministers see the "increased numbers of people rough sleeping outside Parliament".

In 2010, at the end of the last Labour government, 1,768 people were reportedly sleeping rough.

A spokesman said that during cold weather snaps, extra street team patrols are carried out.

He added: "Anyone anxious about a rough sleeper can visit www.streetlink.org.uk to alert our teams and allow us to provide routes off the street and into safety".

Ambulances were called, but by the time they reached the man, he was not breathing.

A spokeswoman for the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "The Mayor was deeply saddened to hear about the death of a man at Westminster Tube station earlier today".
