Avalanche kills one Russian skier in Gulmarg

Indian Army recruits from high altitude warfare school practice at the ski resort of Gulmarg

A Russian skier died after he came under a huge pile of snow at the famed winter resort of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir following an avalanche on Friday.

The skiers had arrived in Gulmarg on February 14 and had taken Gandola ride today before being caught under the snow avalanche. He said Stanislav and the other four skiers had moved to Shinmai bowl despite strict instructions by the department that it was among the avalanche-prone zones. Department of Tourism has expressed grief over the demise of skier. The duo was believed to be experienced skiers exploring the uppermost reaches of Gulmarg reached by a high-altitude gondola.

It is pertinent to mention here that last month one foreign skier Daniel (Kunt Henrik) died in the Snow avalanche in Gulmarg, while another was rescued.

"The skiers had also signed an indemnity bond that they would not go into the backcountry where avalanches occur on a regular basis", said the spokesman.

Authorities had already issued an avalanche warning for upper higher reaches of Kashmir after the recent snowfall. Last June, seven people including two children were killed when the cable auto crashed to the ground. Avalanches and landslides are common in Kashmir.

Earlier on January 6, eleven persons including a junior engineer of Border Roads Organization (BRO)'s BEACON project were killed and two others wounded when swept by three successive avalanches in along Sadhna Top mountain pass in Kupwara.

Avalanches have caused some of the heaviest tolls for the Indian and Pakistani armies camping in the region.
