People react after a powerful quake shook buildings in Mexico City.

A military helicopter assessing damage after a powerful natural disaster in Mexico has crashed, killing 13 people.

On September 19, a magnitude 7.1 quake hit Mexico City, killing at least 216 people.

"I relived a lot of those moments", Trujillo said, still jittery. "It started to shake; the cars were going here and there". She stayed in place, but felt more prepared.

The epicentre of the quake was found along the Pacific coast near Santiago Ixtayutla, a small town in the state of Oaxaca in the southwestern area of Mexico. Later Friday, a magnitude 5.8 aftershock hit Oaxaca, the USGS tweeted. In response to the quake, Mexico City Government tweeted, "Before returning to your homes, it is important to check if there are any damages, turn off gas lines and disconnect energy sources".

He confirmed that helicopters have flown over the city and there is no “major issue, ” and said that the Metro transport system is operational, and that there are no reports of major developments in the drinking water network.

Mercedes Rojas Huerta wasted no time running barefoot out of her home in Mexico City's Condesa neighborhood when she heard the natural disaster alarm on Friday.

Although there have been no casualties directly related to the quake, local media reports that over 570,000 people are without electricity.

People fled into the streets after the earthquake caused buildings to shake in Mexico City

"I'm scared", Rojas Huerta said. "The house is old".

The streets of Condesa were flooded by residents fleeing their homes, including one woman wrapped just in a towel.

"Unfortunately, multiple people on the ground lost their lives and others were injured", he wrote on Twitter, sending his condolences to the families.

In the case of this magnitude 7.2 Mexico quake, while the epicenter is firmly within the parametric trigger zone and at 24 kilometres deep it meets the depth parameter easily, it looks like it is not a high enough magnitude to trigger the notes at this specific location.

CITY – A strong quake of magnitude 7.2 shook Mexico City on Friday, as well as the center and south of the country, causing panic and the activation of emergency protocols, although there have been no reports of victims or casualties.

Oaxaca state authorities opened shelters for those affected, and almost 6,000 soldiers and federal police were deployed to help with the emergency response.

Some damage to buildings was reported in towns near the epicenter.

On the north side of the city, Julia Hernandez said she felt like she was "in a boat" as the ground swayed beneath her feet.
