Gus Kenworthy Wins Without Making the Podium

With a casual kiss, Gus Kenworthy and boyfriend Matthew Wilkas showed how much progress he's made from Sochi to Pyeonchang, South Korea.

As he prepared for his slopestyle skiing run at the PyeongChang Games on Sunday morning, Gus Kenworthy shared a kiss with his boyfriend, Matt Wilkas, that NBC broadcast during its coverage throughout the United States.

While Kenworthy didn't realize the kiss was being broadcast, either, he was happy it was - because it was four years in the making. "It's good that it's televised because it normalizes it more". In South Korea, he's one of two openly gay athletes on Team USA.

Rippon - who has embraced the title of "America's Sweetheart" - has drawn admiration from other celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon and Sally Field, who is now trying to set him up with her son.

"I think that's the only way to really change perceptions, break down homophobia, break down barriers is through representation". That's definitely not something I had as a kid. "I think in a lot of ways it would have an fantastic statement, but I also don't think I would have been ready at that point".

"This moment of affection gives hope and inspiration to LGBTQ people", the group messaged. Before heading out to the slopes for the finals, Kenworthy got a quick kiss.

"On his third and final trip down the course, after he veered off-line on the landing of the second-to-last jump, he simply skied to the side of the final ramp and took the easy way down, knowing his hopes for a second Olympic medal were gone", the AP wrote.

"I let him [Wilkas] fall into a little bit of an afterthought and I think it was a little bit selfish, but I just kind of kept the moment to myself", Kenworthy told NBC in January.

If Kenworthy had to choose between winning a medal while leading a closeted existence or failing to grace the podium while living an authentic life, it wouldn't be close.
