Jake Odorizzi Reportedly Traded from Rays to Twins for Jermaine Palacios

Inevitable MLB moves finally happen

The Rays traded pitcher Jake Odorizzi to the Twins in exchange for minor league infielder Jermaine Palacios, the team announced Saturday.

But they have kept in touch with Tampa Bay throughout the offseason about Archer and Odorizzi, and end up with Odorizzi.

Twins officials considered Palacios a legitimate shortstop prospect. He also headed to the Kansas City Royals as part of the package for Zack Greinke in 2010 and was dealt to the Rays in 2012 as part of the haul for Wade Davis and James Shields.

The Twins attempted to sign Yu Darvish as a free agent, offering him a five year deal at more than $100 million, only to lose out to the Cubs, who got him for six years and $126 million. Instead, they'll add Odorizzi, a 27-year-old right-hander who should immediately slot in as their opening day starter. He's made at least 28 starts in each of the last four seasons, posting a combined 3.81 ERA over 668.1 innings.

Veteran right-hander Jake Odorizzi has reportedly been traded to the Twins. His nine-inning walk rate, however, jumped from 2.6 to 3.8 last season, and his fielding-independent ERA was a career-worst 5.43. That one doesn't move the needle much, but the depth could prove valuable.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Odorizzi, the Twins have transferred Michael Pineda (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day disabled list.

With that in mind, it's possible yet another Rays trade will be coming soon.
