Marcel Hirscher makes Olympic history with second gold

The Latest 2 racers crash in Olympic men's giant slalom

Austrian skiing great Marcel Hirscher claimed his second gold medal of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang with a sensational win in the giant slalom.

Hirscher, who won the combined event on Tuesday, maintained his top place after the first run and posted the winning total of 2 minutes and 18.04 seconds, reports Xinhua news agency. The Austrian can become the 10th male alpine skier to win multiple gold medals at a single Winter Games and the first since his compatriot Benjamin Raich won the slalom and GS in 2006.

Two events, two gold medals for Marcel Hirscher. "Remembering back to 2010 and 2014, finishing twice in fourth position (in giant slalom), it's really good to be in first position". Hirscher skied two almost flawless runs to finish 1.27 seconds ahead of silver medal victor Henrik Kristoffersen, the second-ranked giant slalom skier.

Frenchman Alexis Pinturault bagged bronze in this event at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

"Wow. It was not so easy to be the absolute favourite in this discipline, then sitting up there as the leader from the first run knowing that Henrik ripped it".

Miller got better results in his second run with a time of 1:22.43, ranking 68th out of 85. I knew I have to give 100% and I have to go into this battle. "It's not how I want to do it, that's for sure, but sometimes that's life". "I tried to give a little bit more - but it didn't pay off".

Two-time defending champion Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea took silver in 37.33 and Karolina Ervanova of the Czech Republic earned bronze.

He laid down a near-faultless first run on a course that saw many other racers come unstuck on a tricky, twisting run-in to the finish line.

It was a reversal for Fourcade, who had taken silver in a dramatic finish to the same event in Sochi four years ago.

In addition to the triumph at Sochi, which made him the only USA male Alpine skier with two Olympic golds, he won GS world championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015, along with a bronze in the event at the 2009 worlds. "But still, the silver medal is great".
