"I asked her to keep her confidence level always high", he said.

An India Air Force (IAF) official on Thursday said,"Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo when she flew a MiG-21 bison in her first solo flight". They were formally commission by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on June 18, 2016. She completed her training at Hyderabad Air Force Academy, according to Zee News. She had a knack for violin, painting and chess but chose to join the college flying club.

With Avani, India joins the ranks of the United States, China, France, Turkey, Greece, the UK and Pakistan; all of them have women fighter jet pilots.

Avani Chaturvedi is undergoing a special training, after which she would be able to fly fighter jets like Sukhoi and Tejas. Meanwhile, combat roles in the Army and the Navy are still off-limits for women, due to a combination of operational concerns and logistical constraints.

The recruitment of females in the armed forces was started in 1992.

As recently as three years ago, the then Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha had told reporters that women were physically not suited to fly fighter jets and would potentially face problems while operating the flying machines. The decision to open the combat role in the IAF for women came with a rider; it was on "an experimental basis" for five years initially. The next batch of women for the fighter pilot training have already been selected.
