Ice hockey: American Lamoureux sisters spell double trouble for Canada

Team Canada defenceman Jocelyne Larocque has apologized for what she called an emotional reaction following her team's shootout loss to the U.S.in Thursday's gold medal hockey game.

Team USA won the shootout 3-2, with forward Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scoring the winning goal.

It was a day of sporting ignominy for hockey-mad Canada, winners of the last two Olympic gold medals in men's ice hockey. The Americans lost three of the previous four gold medal games to Canada, the lone exception being a disappointing bronze medal finish in 2006 after losing to Sweden in the semis. After ending the third regulation period tied at 2-2, the teams hustled through a 20-minute overtime period without any goals, and followed it up with a penalty shootout that again resulted in a 2-2 tie.

After the USA tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth end, neither team could score in the sixth or seventh.

When Team USA's women's hockey team hits the ice in Pyeongchang to take on Canada for the gold medal tonight, there should be no doubt that they are among the very best hockey players in the world. It upped Team USA's medal count in maybe the most thrilling event of the Pyeongchang schedule. Just like their rivalry, it was an intense game till the final shootout.

"We're extremely proud of our Boston College players who made the Olympic team", said Katie Crowley, head coach of the Boston College women's hockey team.

Rooney giggled when reporters told her of her new gig.

Team USA's Hilary Knight scored a goal during a power-play in the first period.

"We were going for gold", she said.

Those of us in MA can take a special pride in Team USA members Meghan Duggan of Danvers, Kacey Bellamy of Westfield, Kali Flanagan of Burlington, their teammates who were nurtured at Boston College and those who have gone on to play for the Boston Pride or the Boston Blades.

It was the gold medal match, so you have that already built in.

They drew support from players' associations for the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB and the National Hockey League, and finally, in March 2017, reached an agreement for parity with the men's team, though the exact details have not been released.
