CBI moves court seeking to conduct narco analysis test on Karti Chidambaram

CBI wants to conduct narco test on Karti Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case

Bhaskar Raman was arrested by the ED and is now in judicial custody.

The matter will be taken up by the court on March 9, the next day of hearing.

Mehta began his arguments by handing over a two-page note on developments that happened on Monday, which he did not want to say in an open court as it would affect investigations.

On Tuesday, the CBI had moved three applications in the court, one of which had asked for a narco test on Karti, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Karti, had forcefully opposed the CBI's plea for extension of Karti's custody, saying the agency had confronted his client for just 25 minutes during these five days. He is accused of receiving kickbacks a decade back to clear foreign investment into INX Media group, using the influence of his father P. Chidambaram, who was then the Union finance minister.

He said Karti had refused to share his phone password with his interrogators which 'is also a proof that he was not co-operating.

While in the apex court, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said that its order would not come in the way of proceedings being conducted before any other court, in the trial court, judge Rana said custodial interrogation of Karti was necessary to "speed up" and "maintain continuity" in the probe to secure evidence to arrive at the truth. The Supreme court extended his custody for further questioning.

He had approached the top court seeking cancellation of a summons issued to him by the ED.

The CBI alleged Karti also received money from INX media to scuttle a tax probe.

The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15 previous year against alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.
