Notre Dame basketball misses out on NCAA Tournament

Penn State certainly had some bad losses, and has nobody to blame but itself for missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

In NIT college basketball activity on Wednesday, the Temple Owls and the Penn State Nittany Lions will be meeting up at Bryce Jordan Center.

After starting the season 15-10 with wins over Wichita State and Auburn, the Owls stumbled down the stretch losing five of their last seven and finishing seventh in the American Athletic Conference. "It basically discredited our entire league schedule and no matter what we or some of the other teams in our league did during the Pac-12 or the conference tournament did not obviously matter".

The Nittany Lions will nearly certainly make the NCAA Tournament, with the Pairwise Probability Matrix giving them a 99.8% chance of making it before Saturday's game. Ohio State's home rink, Value City Arena, is always booked for the second weekend in March for the statewide Ohio boys' high school wrestling tournament. "We feel we deserve to be in there, but we can't complain and hang our head. The NIT was never the goal - nobody wants to play in it - but since we're in it, we're going to try and make the most out of it and win the whole thing".

"Obviously, it sucks", senior guard Matt Farrell said. Notre Dame is a defense-first team, but it is significant that the Irish were able to figure out how to outplay Penn State at its own game.

Maybe this isn't what I should start with, but I was delighted that both semifinal games were close games that came down to the last minute on either side of regulation. "We were very realistic about how this could go given where we were today with our resume and the whole bit".

Thirty-two teams compete in the NIT, compared to 68 in the NCAA tournament. It tops the field with 26 wins in the tourney. The Bears will face Wagner in their first game Tuesday night, and the Gaels take on Southeastern Louisiana later that night.

Northern Kentucky (22-9) at Louisville (20-13), 7 p.m. Golden Eagles coach Steve Wojciechowski and Crimson coach Tommy Amaker each played for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke.
