South Africa win second Test against Australia to level series

David Warner has guided Australia to 1-98 at lunch on day one of the second Test in Port Elizabeth

Rabada bowled the Proteas to a series-levelling victory in Port Elizabeth, earning man-of-the-match honours after snaring figures of 11-150 in the second Test. It didn't. Injured allrounder Mitch Marsh shelled a simple slips catch when South Africa were 0-7 in the second over of the run chase.

Rabada, who was suspended for one Test against England last summer following an altercation with Ben Stokes, has five demerit points and will receive a two-Test ban if he reaches eight.

Mitchell Marsh (45) started the proceedings with a shaky boundary but Rabada (6-54) went on to castle him at the end of the over.

"I've let myself and the team down", Rabada told reporters after play on Monday.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) immediately announced they had 48 hours to appeal the decision and were seeking legal opinion.

Rabada is one of the most popular cricketers in South Africa, mainly for his major talent but also because he is a young black player in a sport focusing on bringing black players through to the national team to erase the legacy of apartheid. He had the opportunity to avoid the contact, and I could not see any evidence to support the argument that the contact was accidental. He was also fined 50 per cent of his match fee.

"I was very motivated to prove to everyone that I can still play the game, even though I have been away for a while", he said.

"You could say that the contact (between Rabada and Smith) was very, very minimal".

"I think all the quicks are going really well. To be honest, I just let it out", he said.

Rabada said it was different from the case against him when he gave Ben Stokes of England a send-off in a Test at Lord's a year ago, which resulted in a single demerit point which added to a previous three points ruled him out of the next Test.

"I don't know what I am thinking actually". Rabada's fate could dominate the news agenda in the lead-up to the third Test - which gets underway next Thursday - in the same way that he dominated this match. "But that's where I'm sitting as a player, not as an official", he said.

The cricketer further added that the little battles in the middle will be good for the survival of Test cricket. I have to see it as a big learning curve and not repeat the same mistake.

Rabada pleaded guilty to the second charge of provoking Australia batsman David Warner when he screamed in Warner's face after dismissing him in the second innings.

Rabada's early blitz ensured Australia, 180-5 overnight, didn't get too much more in its second innings at St. George's.

Rabada's clash with Smith came after an ugly off-field confrontation between Warner and Quinton de Kock marred the first Test in Durban.

Pat Cummins (5) and Mitchell Starc (1) followed soon after, Lungi Ngidi (2-24) had Nathan Lyon caught behind and when Josh Hazlewood (17) holed out off Keshav Maharaj (2-90), Australia were 239 all out. Tim Paine was left unbeaten on 28. Australia had won the first Test.

South Africa's Dale Steyn plays a shot.
