Ex Machina's Alex Garland Brings New Pilot to FX

Alex Garland is taking a turn to the small screen, teaming up with FX for his newest project.

Annihilation and Ex Machina mastermind Alex Garland's drama series Devs is getting an FX pilot, as announced today by Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.

It's already written [and] my plan at the moment is to direct the eight episodes, but for practical reasons that might not be possible. The story, set in Silicon Valley, will center on a young computer engineer, named Lily, who, suspicious of her "cutting-edge tech company" employer after the disappearance of her boyfriend, starts a unsafe investigation into the secret activities of its development division. The planned show, which will go before the cameras later this year with Garland writing and directing the pilot, is based over at FX Networks. Lily begins to investigate the disappearance of her boyfriend, believing her employer and their top-secret development division may be to blame.

"Devs" was developed under the overall television production deal that Garland signed with FX Productions in July. In the past, Garland earned an Academy Award nomination for his Ex Machina screenplay, as well as three BAFTA nominations for his work on that film.

Devs sounds like an auspicious venture into a new medium for Garland, who got his start with the novel The Beach, which was adapted into the Leonard DiCaprio feature of the same name.

Garland received an Oscar nomination for Ex Machina and has also worked on dystopian movies 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go and Netflix's Annihilation, which is one of the rare movies to achieve popularity on the streamer.

Devs, the first pilot order from FX's new class, joins a roster that includes American Crime Story, American Horror Story, The Americans, Legion, Feud, Taboo, Pose, Snowfall, and Trust.
