Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ launched with improved performance

There are quite a few different Raspberry Pi models in existence, but it's not too hard to keep them straight: new ones are better. Today is also known as Pi Day for math lovers in the World.

The folks over at the Foundation also mentioned that the $20 Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+ is being considered for replacement by a new Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, but no timeline was given.

The Model B+ uses the same Broadcom processor as the Model B, but in a new package, allowing it to be clocked at a slightly higher 1.4Ghz, compared to the 1.2Ghz on the previous model.

The board also incorporates power integrity optimisations, a heat spreader, and dual-band wireless LAN and Bluetooth.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is supported, with an add-on planned that will allow the 5V needed to power the Pi to be slurped from the PoE supply. Therefore, the Raspberry Pi 1 B+ will continue to sell at $25, while the 2 B and 3 B continue at $35.

Otherwise, the new Pi board is identical to the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 2, featuring four USB 2.0 ports, a 40-pin GPIO header, one full-size HDMI port, display and camera ports, and four-pole stereo output and composite video ports.

As the name suggests, the Pi 3 B+ shares many features with the original Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, launched back in February 2016.

TechRepublic's Nick Heath got his hand on Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ and found out that this model of Raspberry is the fastest among all the Raspberry model available now. He added that on the addition of 802.11ac Wi-Fi, it gives the model triple throughout.

Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi Trading said: "When we launched the Raspberry Pi 3 two years ago, we expected to see an increase in its use as an embedded product, especially in IoT related projects".
