Sadiq Khan reads out examples of racist abuse he receives online

A mantra for which Khan has gained this popularity is "London is Open", which signifies that the city is accepting of all people, talents, creativity and technologies - as long as everyone obliges with rules and regulations set in place by the government.

The Mayor will read out some of the abusive and illegal tweets he has received since taking office in 2016 and highlight growing evidence of overseas meddling in United Kingdom elections and the rise of "fake news".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has shared some of the racial abuse he is subjected to on a daily basis online as he demanded social media firms take action to tackle hate speech. Last year, Germany passed a law which allows the country to fine a site up to €50 million if they do not remove an abusive post within 24 hours.

"Germany is an example of where the German government said "Enough. Unless you take down hate messages, unless you take down fake news, we will fine you".

"I want to work with the tech companies, but you have to be responsible", he continued.

Khan will single out Uber - which had its operating license revoked after it ran afoul of Transport for London's regulators - saying that the company "must play by the rules", and warning that the sharing economy, if left unchecked, could lead to workers' pay and rights being eroded. He first talked about how he was shocked by the amount of hipsters here in Austin, Texas, followed by a comment that he's excited to be on nearly the same time zone as President Donald Trump.

"This isn't about depriving people of free speech - this is about inciting hatred", Kahn said.

"President Trump has lots of followers and some of them have shown interest in me".

In a moving segment of the speech, Khan read six abusive tweets he'd received during his time as mayor - some that called him a terrorist or suggested that he kill himself.

He said: "But ask yourself this - what happens when young boys and girls from minority backgrounds see this kind of thing on their timelines - or experience it themselves?"

He is expected to say: "Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have brought huge benefits to society".

Fake news and the algorithms, which the Mayor said were "blinkering us" from different points of view, were also criticised in the video.

In the style of U.S. talk show host Jimmy Kimmel's Mean Tweets feature, the video begins in a jovial and lighthearted fashion, with tweets saying Khan looks like various animals and a bad stunt double of Manchester United's Jose Mourinho.
