Temperatures are set to plummet this weekend

Sunday is also likely to see further snow, especially for parts of the South West, where as much as 25cm could fall on higher ground.

Most places are likely to see some wintry showers by the end of the day, with gusty winds bringing bitterly cold temperatures.

The cold conditions have been dubbed "The Beast From The East 2.0".

Amber warnings for snow and ice have been issued between 4pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday, as snow showers are expected to become more frequent, with icy patches also developing on some untreated roads and paths.

A status orange snow-ice warning will be in place for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath and Waterford from 3am until midday tomorrow.

He said: "We don't expect anything like the same impact as a result of it, although there will be some snow about".

Snow has fallen across many parts of the United Kingdom as a new cold snap begins to grip the country.

However, Scotland looks set to avoid heavy snowfalls forecast for parts of England and Wales.

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said: "It's going to be a very, very cold start, with a widespread frost and ice around as well".

A MET Office amber warning for snow has been extended as forecasters predict snow will continue to fall across Somerset.

"Snow will be most persistent and heavy during Sunday afternoon and evening over Dartmoor and much of South Devon, where a further 10-15 cm is expected and as much as 20-30 cm over eastern parts of Dartmoor".

Highways England and the Met Office are warning people to only drive is absolutely necessary with more snow and high winds forecast tonight.

There is a chance that some rural communities will be cut off.

"An alert from Public Health England read: "[It] may come as a shock to the system for some whose bodies may struggle to cope in cold weather.

Dr Thomas Waite, a health protection consultant for PHE, said: "The weather has felt much milder for the last week or so but this weekend the forecasters tell us it will get much colder again".

"And we have plenty of snow showers to start the day".
