Trump slams Mueller investigation, draws Republican ire

The dismissal of the 21-year-veteran of the FBI on the verge of his retirement roiled Washington, with Democrats saying it was meant to put a chill on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation and Republicans claiming it was needed to rein in a runaway federal agency.

"I think we owe it to the average American to have a hearing in the Judiciary Committee, where Mr. Sessions, Attorney General Sessions, comes forward with whatever documentation he has about the firing, and give Mr. McCabe a chance to defend himself", the SC lawmaker said on CNN's "State of the Union". Mueller's investigation is overseen by Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general Mr. Trump nominated himself.

When asked, Strong did not comment directly on whether Congress should advance legislation to protect Mueller.

Republican allies of the president have seized upon the fact some of Mueller's team - seven out of 17 lawyers according to The Washington Post - previously donated money to Democratic political candidates.

South Carolina GOP Sen.

Flake said he was "puzzled" by the White House's intense focus on former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe and disagreed with Trump declaring McCabe's firing "a great day for democracy".

Gowdy was part of the Republican majority on the House Intelligence Committee that concluded a week ago that there was no collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, but said in the television interview, "You should want Special Counsel Mueller to take all the time and have all the independence he needs to do his job".

Graham said in his interview that he would like the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which both Graham and Flake sit, to hold a hearing with Sessions and McCabe on the issue.

Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Lankford, also a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on ABC's "This Week" that he does not think Trump will move to oust Mueller despite Dowd's comments.

"My advice to the president is the same thing I just told his lawyer: give Bob Mueller the time, the independence and the resources to do the very job".

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, issued a statement regarding Mr. Trump and his harsh words for Mueller to the New York Times.

Mr McCabe, who was sacked two days before he had been due to retire, has said he is the victim of a Trump administration "war" against the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the special counsel.

The comments underscored the risks for Mr Trump if he goes too far to thwart the federal probe.

"I don't like the way it happened", Rubio said.

"He's just doing his job", King said.

"I think the president's attorney, frankly, does him a disservice when he says that and when he frames the investigation that way".

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement on Sunday that Trump "is floating trial balloons about deraiing the Mueller investigation".

"I think it was a disgusting day for democracy", Flake said.

"He should've been allowed to finish through the weekend", Rubio said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Trump had long pressured his attorney general Jeff Sessions to remove McCabe, alleging bias in the FBI was behind investigations into his campaign.

Graham responded, "Well. if he tried to do that, would be the beginning of the end of his presidency because we're a rule-of-law nation".

Graham said the angles needed to be sorted out.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, of IL, said on "Fox News Sunday" that he agreed with Gowdy's remarks, adding that "any effort by the President or his counsel to try to stop this investigation needs to be resisted on a bipartisan basis". Fueling Mr. Trump's aggravation now is the special counsel's latest inquiry: a subpoena to the Trump Organization.
