DNC Hacker "Guccifer 2.0" slips up, reveals he is Russian intel operative

Not Released

According to the report, they were able to pinpoint Guccifer 2.0 as an officer in the Russian General Main Staff Intelligence Directorate (also known as the GRU), the country's largest foreign intelligence agency. Guccifer 2.0 began releasing the emails in July 2016, months before the USA presidential elections.

An anonymous source close to the United States government told The Daily Beast that Guccifer 2.0 failed to log into the VPN that had been disguising their traffic, which meant one truthful IP address was found.

On Thursday, The Daily Beast published a report about the true identity of the hacker who goes by the identity Guccifer 2.0, who had taken responsibility for leaking emails that had been stolen from the Democratic National Committee.

It's important to note that this claim hasn't been confirmed by the USA government.

A report revealed that Guccifer 2.0, who was in contact with Trump aide Roger Stone, was actually a Russian intelligence officer. In January 2017, USA intelligence officials linked Guccifer 2.0 to the Russian spying agency with "high confidence", but didn't confirm the link unequivocally.

The DNC materials that were sent to Wikileaks and other organisations exposed details about Hilary Clinton's presidential campaign and information about how the DNC operated internally; it could be seen as a game changer for President Donald Trump ahead of the election.

Investigators in the US acquired the IP address and used it to track down the individual behind it.

Kyle Ehmke, an intelligence researcher at cyber security company ThreatConnect, was tasked with leading an investigation into Guccifer's identity. Guccifer 2.0 became his own media personality via a WordPress blog and Twitter, always sticking to the Romanian line.

"We started seeing these inconsistencies that led back to the idea that he was created hastily.by the individual or individuals that affected the DNC compromise", he added. The agent apparently logged in to an American social media company website with the VPN service off and US Federal agents were quick to get hold of the original IP address, which they traced to the GRU's headquarters on Grizodubovoy Street in Moscow.
