A Dalit youngster was beaten to death in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district on Thursday night by a group of villagers allegedly because he owned a horse.

Acting quickly the police filed a complaint and picked up three suspects from a nearby village and called in the Bhavnagar Crime Branch for further investigations in the case.

When Pradeep Rathod bought a horse for himself; hardly had he imagined that some day.

The victim's father, Kalubhai Rathod, alleged that Pradip wanted to sell off the horse after he had received threats from some people believed to be from a particular caste. When he did not return home till late yesterday night, we got anxious and started looking for him.

One Natubha Darbar of Timbi village and some other unidentified persons have been shown as accused in the FIR, police said.

"About a week ago, when I was riding the horse with my son, one of the persons from the upper caste Kshatriya (warrior) community warned us not to ride the horse in the village". The accused are said to be the native of Timbi village.

Kalubhai told the police that Pradeep rode out to the family's farm on Thursday and said they would have dinner together after he returns. "When he did not return till late, we got anxious and started looking for him. The horse was also lying dead at a little distance".

Modi has urged a halt to attacks on Dalits, who make up about 200 million of the population of 1.25 billion, and an end to caste discrimination. Pradeep's body was shifted to Bhavnagar Civil Hospital for post-mortem even while his family said they would not accept the body till those responsible were arrested.
