New JRR Tolkien Book The Fall Of Gondolin Hitting Bookshelves This Year

The Fall of Gondolin follows the release of Beren and Luthien in May 2017. (Yep, this all happened 20 years before The Hobbit was first published.) The manuscript was later edited by his son Christopher Tolkien and illustrated by Alan Lee, who also worked on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien never actually wrote the full story, but Christopher Tolkien has compiled a version of it from various sources. "But here it is". Expect a doomed love story, an epic battle believed to the largest one Tolkien has ever described (wait for the two-part movie on that alone, directed by Peter Jackson), as well as a half-human/half-elf child slated for destiny.

Tolkien and the Great War: The Threshold of Middle-earth author John Garth stated that, "It's a quest story with a reluctant hero who turns into a genuine hero - it's a template for everything Tolkien wrote afterwards". "It has a dark lord, our first encounter with orcs and balrogs", Garth continued.

According to publisher HarperCollins, the conflict in The Fall of Gondolin sets the "uttermost evil" Morgoth against the sea-god Ulmo. Those who have indulged in The Silmarillion may recognize the name, as it was referenced in the book. It's called The Fall of Gondolin and it details one of Middle-earth's oldest and most important legends. Eärendil is the father of Elrond, the future lord of Rivendell, and Elros, the progenitor of the line of Numenor whose descendants include Aragorn, the future king of Gondor.

While The Fall of Gondolin takes place in the ancient Elven city, this tale will be told through the eyes of a human, named Tuor.

Here is the books byline "During the years that the dark lord Morgoth (Sauron's predecessor and mentor) reigned supreme in Middle-Earth, his fellow godlike Valar refused to intervene against him on behalf of the peoples of Middle-Earth".

Likely drawing inspiration from his harrowing experience, The Fall of Gondolin contains one of Tolkien's largest battles narratives outside of The Lord of the Rings.

So in 2007 Christopher Tolkien released The Children of Hurin, which was followed by Beren and Luthien past year.
