PlayStation 5 Likely Won't Release Until 2020

PS4 system update 5.53

It's been announced that Death Road to Canada, the hit randomly-generated road trip roguelike from developer Rocketcat Games, will blast its way onto PS4, Xbox One, and Switch on April 25th. It would only make sense to launch the next one after a while. The Japanese company is selling so many PS4 and PS4 Pro units that it should be in no rush to bring out the PS5.

There had been reports recently that Sony may come up with PlayStation 5 by this year, but that's not really happening. In the midst of GDC last month, Kotaku caught up with "dozens of game developers" across multiple studios and asked about the PS5. Assuming arly dev kits are in the wild, that still puts the PlayStation 5 on track for a late 2019 or 2020 release. The console is unlikely to release in 2019 either. The sources said that multi-year plans for projects are always shifting, but it may be too much of a stretch to think that the PlayStation 5 will arrive this year. Even developers at Sony's first-party studios had not been briefed on the existence of the PS5 yet, and these are the developers now working on games scheduled for 2019 and later.

"We're thrilled to announce the console release date for Death Road To Canada", said Kepa Auwae, Co-Founder of Rocketcat Games. The publication added that the console would launch in 2018. For the PS5 to launch this year, it would need to be in manufacturing already. In that case, there would have been supply chain leaks all over the place. Kotaku's sources mention 2020 being a more believable timeframe. A source told Kotaku that early devkits could take the form of a PC with a test version of the CPU and GPU of the end product, so it might not look like PlayStation hardware whatsoever. Even early devkits might not resemble a PlayStation at all.

We're now approaching the five year anniversary of the PS4's initial launch. In fact, word on the street with actual developers seems to be hinting at a potential 2020 release date.
