Azerbaijan CEC: Ilham Aliyev re-elected with 86% of votes

Ilham Aliyev

Several exit polls released after polling stations closed predicted that President Ilham Aliyev won more than 80 percent of the vote, which would be in line with pre-election opinion surveys. The Azerbaijani people chose the right path.

"I am grateful to my people for voting for our achievements and success", Aliyev said on state television, soon after the election commission announced the first results.

The deputy prime minister also noted that Azerbaijan will develop more rapidly in the next seven years, the role of Azerbaijan in energy security of the world will increase and the economic development will accelerate.

Ilham Aliyev was re-elected in 2008 and 2013 in polls that were denounced by opposition parties as fraudulent. This new election victory offers the president a further seven years in office.

Azerbaijan's future, as its present day, is related to Ilham Aliyev, added Ahmadov.

The election that had been due in the autumn was moved up to April. Six of the candidates were nominated by political parties, one candidate was a self-nominee and another candidate was nominated by an initiative group. It also highlighted problems on polling day itself: "On election day, global observers reported widespread disregard for mandatory procedures, lack of transparency, and numerous serious irregularities, such as ballot box stuffing".
