California to give Trump some National Guard patrols at Mexican border

Texan officials said about 300 troops would be dispatched by the state weekly until the complement of the National Guard reaches at least 1,000

Jerry Brown announced Wednesday that he will send an additional 400 National Guard members to the border, but their objective will not be for "enforcing federal immigration laws".

He sent a defiant letter to the Trump administration on Wednesday, saying the additional troops will only supplement the staffing of California's ongoing program to combat transnational crime.

McGuire said the mission, formally called "Operation Guardian Shield", will extend through September 30, 2018.

Trump has said he wants up to 4,000 troops to be sent to the border to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Of these new guard members, some would be stationed at the border, he said, while others would be deployed to the coast and other parts of California.

State government officials in California said Brown's proposed agreement on the troop deployment had been submitted to the federal government for approval. He said the troops were needed because of "lawlessness that continues at our southern border", and he wanted increased security while he continues his push to build a wall along the entire border.

The spokeswoman for President Donald Trump has welcomed the decision by California's Democrat governor to deploy 400 National Guard troops for a presidential request aimed at fighting illegal immigration and drug trafficking along the U.S. -Mexico border.

But he emphasized that the troops wouldn't be enforcing federal immigration policies. Earlier this month, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said she would flat-out reject the president's request.

The number of people caught trying to illegally cross the U.S. -Mexico border a year ago was the lowest since 1971, according to the federal Department of Homeland Security.

He says none of the troops who are being deployed are required to carry guns but that they can do so if they feel the need to protect themselves.

"Here are the facts: There is no massive wave of migrants pouring into California", he wrote. Customs and Border Protection report, there was a 37-percent increase overall in March, when compared to February and a 203 percent increase compared to March of a year ago. He said the program is "currently staffed by 250 personnel statewide, including 55 at the California border".

The federal government must agree to California's terms before the troops would be deployed. "That's why the state and the Guard have long supported this important work and agreed to similar targeted assistance in 2006 under President Bush and in 2010 under President Obama".
