Commonwealth Games 2018: Shooter Ankur Mittal wins bronze in Men's Double Trap

Botha competes against Nigeria's Ebimienfaghe Assizecourt on Thursday

Continuing India's medal rush at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games, shooter Shreyasi Singh clinched the country's first gold medal on the seventh day in the women's double trap final here at the Belmont Shotgun Range on Wednesday. Om Mitharval also bagged a bronze medal in the Men's 50m Pistol Finals which happened earlier in the day.

It took Sushil one-minute-and-twenty seconds to defeat South Africa's Johannes Botha on technical superiority to claim his third successive gold medal at the CWG.

A Delhi University graduate, Shreyasi held her nerve in the shoot-off to have the last laugh and improve on her silver-winning showing at the Glasgow Games four years ago.

Kiran also defeated Nigeria's Blessing Onyebuchi by 10-0 by Technical Superiority to clinch a bronze medal for India in Women's Freestyle 76 kg.

Double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and Rahul Aware claimed contrasting gold medals in 74 kg and 53 kg categories respectively. Shreyasi also became the third Indian woman to win a shooting gold at these Games, following Manu Bhaker's gold in 10m Air Pistol and Heena Sidhu's triumph in 25m Pistol.

Cox missed 12 of her 30 shots in the fourth round after placing herself in the gold medal position.

Shreyasi's success in Double Trap was one of the three shooting medals India won yesterday.

"I have been waiting for this medal for the last 10 years".

23-year-old Mitharval, participating in his first Commonwealth Games, had also finished first in the qualification round of the 10m air pistol event after shooting 584 points to equal the Commonwealth Games record, which was previously held exclusively by India's Samaresh Jung.

The experienced James Willett was the first to be eliminated. "I hope my victory would inspire other Indian women, who want to flourish in this career", said an elated Shreyasi, who had won a silver medal in the double trap event at the 2017 Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Brisbane, Australia. The competitions of this weight will be held under a single league system because of the little number of entries. "I am satisfied with the intensity I put in but obviously I could not get the result I wanted", she said.
