Donnie Yen Cast in Disney's Live-Action Mulan

Donnie Yen Mulan

Known as "Fairy Sister" for her innocent persona and easy-going demeanor, Liu appeared in the third installment of the Ip Man franchise, which Yen toplines as the eponymous Ip Man, the sole practitioner of Wing Chun.

The live-action Mulan just got even more talent added to its cast, including the film's main villain. After yesterday's announcement that martial arts and Rogue One star Donnie Yen was joining the production, both Gong Li and Jet Li have been cast in key roles, the Tracking Board confirms.

Disney is evidently in final talks with Jet Li to play the role of emperor of China, who initiates the male from each household draft.

"Mulan" will join Disney's slate of successful live-action reboots, including "Maleficent", "Cinderella", "The Jungle Book", "Beauty and the Beast", and the upcoming "The Lion King" and "Dumbo". Gong Li is another seasoned veteran of the Chinese filmmaking industry, and is now set to play Mulan's villain - a powerful witch.

The live-action movie will adapt the Chinese legends of Hua Mulan, the woman who disguised herself as a man to take her aging father's place in the Chinese Imperial army.

Disney previously released an animated version of Mulan in 1998 featuring the voice of Ming-Na. Gong starred opposite Jeremy Irons in Wayne Wang's Chinese Box and has acted in English in Memoirs of a Geisha, Miami Vice and Hannibal Rising. The New Zealand-based actress' credits include local series Filthy Rich and Australian series The Letdown and Dead Lucky.

Mulan is now set to hit theaters on March 27, 2020. Yen will play Commander Tung, who serves as a mentor for Mulan.
