Dubai drivers may soon be using smart number plates

Dubai Set to Test Digital Number Plates on Cars in the City

The plate will even flash "stolen" in the event of a carjacking. But with the advancement also comes plenty of privacy concerns.

Vehicles in Dubai will soon be equipped with smart number plates that can automatically send out alert to police and ambulance centres in case of accidents or any other emergencies, according to local media reports.

The smart plate will be linked to a driver's traffic file and e-purse, allowing the motorists to carry out vehicle registration, testing and pay fines or fees on the go. The item would also enable drivers to communicate with others on the road about any accidents they witness on the road or traffic spots they encounter, to help create a more informed driver experience for Dubai residents.

You can also pay for parking via an e-wallet connected to the digital plates and incredibly, if someone attempts to steal the auto or steal the plate, the word "stolen" will flash up.

Criminals looking to use fake paper license plates to skirt vehicle inspections or drive around off-the-radar now have one more obstacle in their way as the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles starts issuing a new design aimed at being more hard to copy.

Abullah Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of RTA's Licensing Agency said that the system is part of 10X and a first in the world. It's not clear how much the plates will cost for now, but Sultan Abdullah said the final cost of the project will only be known after the trial ends in November.

Dubai has got major plans of expansion in terms of technology in the transportation sector and aspires for self-driving vehicles to account for a quarter of journeys by the year 2030.

The trial period will see the plates put the test in Dubai's hot dry climate. Several high-speed Hyperloop pods are also in the pipeline, one that's capable of transporting passengers to the UAE's capital Abu Dhabi in just 12 minutes, over a distance of 120 km.
