EPA Reportedly Used Social Media To Justify Pruitt's Expensive Security

But Carper and Whitehouse say the documents that they have, including investigations by the U.S. Secret Service, show there were no credible threats to justify the level of security the EPA is providing to Pruitt.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt wanted to refashion the floral EPA logo because he felt it resembled a marijuana leaf. Senate Democrats sought to undercut that argument Tuesday, citing a recent internal EPA analysis that concluded "EPA Intelligence has not identified any specific, credible, direct threat to the EPA administrator".

Pruitt's ideas for a redesign, which he floated to EPA employees during his first few months in office, sough to include symbols that represent himself, including a buffalo to denote his home state of Oklahoma and a Bible verse to represent his faith, according to the Times.

"Scott Pruitt has faced an unprecedented amount of death threats against him", spokesman Jahan Wilcox said in a statement.

In a letter sent to Pruitt Wednesday, House Oversight Chairman Trey Gowdy of SC said EPA had failed to hand over documents he requested in February, including copies of any waivers permitting the administrator to use premium class airfare.

The Democrats' letter "is exactly why members should not publicly disclose information that relates to the safety of a cabinet member", Barrasso continued.

EPA's inspector general is now auditing Pruitt's security spending — one of at least five ongoing probes by the agency's watchdog into spending and ethics issues surrounding the administrator.

"The American public needs to have confidence that ethics violations, as well as the appearance of ethics violations, are investigated and appropriately addressed", wrote acting director David J. Apol, The New York Times reported. The Associated Press first reported last week that the 20-member team tasked with providing day-and-night protection for Pruitt had racked up salary, overtime and travel expenses approaching $3-million.

If confirmed, Wheeler would be next in line if Pruitt resigns or is fired.

"It is hard to reconcile the public statements of E.P.A., and the President, with these internal and external assessments", Whitehouse and Carper wrote. They include audits of his travel practices and the costs of his protective detail, his purchase of a $43,000 soundproof phone booth past year and hiring practices, under authority granted by the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendment.

EPA Inspector General Arthur Elkins is conducting at least five investigative audits related to Pruitt, including a probe into questionable spending by his swollen security detail.

"Either way", they add, their committee "has a responsibility to look into these matters".

President Donald Trump has come out in support of Pruitt, saying that he is "totally under siege" because of his work at the EPA.
