Facebook Offering Big Rewards To Users Who Spot Data Breaches

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg listens while testifying before a joint Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees hearing regarding the company’s use and protection of user data on Capitol Hill in Washington US Apr 10 2018. Reuters

"2018 is an important year for the whole world".

Durbin was among many senators who grilled Zuckerberg on what the social network collected on its users, following revelations that the Trump campaign-affiliated data mining firm Cambridge Analytica scooped up data on millions of Americans without their knowledge. "It certainly doesn't feel that way to me", Zuckerberg said.

Under the heading "Defend Facebook" were the words, "If attacked: Respectfully, I reject that".

He said the Russian campaign of disinformation had been discovered "right around the time" of the United States presidential election, and said the company had developed "new AI tools" to identify fake accounts responsible.

"If these senators walked into this room, fired up, ready to regulate this company, and they made it very clear that they didn't know what they are talking about, what do we end with?"

After a pause, and some laughter from himself and the room, Mr Zuckerberg said: "No". What can Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg do to control spread of fake news on WhatsApp?

Zuckerberg clearly admitted to mistakes and took responsibility.

Ever since the Facebook data breach reports came in, we are no longer sure about how safe and secure our personal information is with Facebook.

During the hearing, Zuckerberg claimed that Facebook had asked Cambridge Analytica to delete its data back in 2015, when it first became aware of the leak.

Greene said the new offer was inspired by the "bug bounty" offered by Facebook and other online services to reward people who find security flaws.

According to the lawsuit, Facebook knowingly built its platform to allow Kogan and other third parties to obtain data through an app on the site, to "steal users' personal information".

Facebook has been named in a federal investigation into possible Russian interference with the 2016 USA presidential election - it's alleged Russian operatives purchased some 3,000 Facebook ads spreading conservative propaganda aimed at tipping the election to Donald Trump.

Since the scandal broke Zuckerberg has said there will be new policies moving forward which will place greater restrictions on exactly how external apps collect data and where it goes once they've got it.

Users could have had their data compromised either because they logged into the app on their own account, or one of their friends did so.
