Facebook's Zuckerberg vows to work harder to block hate speech in Myanmar

FACEBOOK Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, on Wednesday told lawmakers that he was among the 87 million or so Facebook Inc users whose data was improperly shared with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

"In general we collect data on people who are not signed up for Facebook for security purposes", Zuckerberg said Wednesday in a hearing about the social network's privacy practices in Washington before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

And his company regained more than $25 billion in market value that is had lost since it was revealed in March that Cambridge Analytica, a data-mining firm affiliated with Donald Trump's presidential campaign, gathered personal information from 87 million users to try to influence elections.

Mr. Zuckerberg explained that when thinking about regulations, government officials need to differentiate between internet companies like his and broadband providers, the companies that build and run the "pipes" that carry internet traffic, like AT&T and Comcast.

Zuckerberg replied, "When people ask us if we're a media company - or a publisher - my understanding of what the heart of what they're really getting at is, 'Do we feel responsibility for the content on our platform?' The answer to that, I think, is clearly yes".

Yes, I'm talking about Mark Zuckerberg, who has now completed day 2 of a Congressional hearing about the havoc wreaked by Facebook controlling how a large portion of the world experiences the internet, among other things.

Zuckerberg also stressed that users have the ability to manage and delete their own data, but he failed to address how hard it can be to purge data shared with third-party companies like apps through Facebook. They asked the company's CEO about how much data Facebook collects on people when they aren't logged into the service-or when they don't even have an account.

Zuckerberg faced tougher questions from House lawmakers over Facebook's stance than during Tuesday's five-hour session in the Senate, where his defense of data sharing was weakly challenged.

She said that "robust penalties" for breaches like Cambridge Analytica's could be put in place, even for "first-time violations".

Zuckerberg said Facebook itself will work to notify users and prevent future breaches of privacy. Davidsen also said they received approval from Facebook because they "were on our side".

"I can't let you filibuster right now", Republican Representative Marsha Blackburn said at one point. If we find that they're doing anything improper, we'll ban them from Facebook and we will tell everyone affected.

"I've just seen it over and over again - that we have the hearings, and nothing happens", he said.

Most of Zuckerberg's testimony, though, focused on privacy issues and user data.

The GDPR requires companies make terms and conditions easier to read and comprehend. "We've got to fix that", he said.

On Tuesday, Zuckerberg promised to better protect Facebook users. I don't know what information was leaked out and what it means to my Facebook.
