India successfully puts IRNSS-1I navigation satellite into orbit

ISRO officials said the rocket launched Wednesday was also the first to fly with propellant tanks constructed using a technique called friction stir welding, a more efficient manufacturing method used on SpaceX's Falcon rocket family and NASA's Space Launch System.

The mission director stationed at the spaceport's launch control center announced the successful separation of India's ninth navigation satellite - IRNSS 1I - approximately 19 minutes after liftoff.

Seven satellites will be necessary to provide a flawless satellite based navigation. The last such satellite, the IRNSS 1H, which was set to launch in August 31, 2017, remained stuck in space, as the rocket that was to launch the satellite, had failed.

The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched its navigation satellite, INRSS-1I, on Thursday early morning from the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota.

As per the ISRO Chairman, IRNSS-1l was placed successfully in the designated orbit. So far, Isro has developed and built satellites, spacecraft and rockets on its own, while depending on firms such as Godrej, Larson and Toubro and Bharat Electronics for systems and sub-systems.

Of the seven satellites in NAVIC, built to provide fast and efficient navigation in India, two were built as backups.

Like its other IRNSS predecessors, IRNSS-1I also carries two types of payloads for navigation and ranging. The configuration of IRNSS-1I is similar to IRNSS-1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F and 1G.

Meanwhile, ranging payload of IRNSS-1I consists of a C-band transponder, which facilitates accurate determination of the range of the satellite. IRNSS-1I also carries Corner Cube Retro Reflectors for laser ranging. The space agency plans to install signal receivers on the ground, which will give weather alerts to fishermen in the sea and will also help them in positioning. All fishermen have to do is to download an application on their phones.

The Indian space agency also said NavIC is useful for merchant ships in their navigation and also during search and rescue operations. The former is for all users while the latter is an encrypted service for only authorised users.

To recall, GSAT-6A was launched onboard Geosynchronous rocket GSLV-F08 from the Sriharikota on March 29.

Each satellite has a life span of 10 years.
