Launches; Disney's first paid streamer priced at $4.99 per month

"The company has made it a point to constantly underline that ESPN+ is meant to complement and augment the network that's home to "SportsCenter" and a regular schedule of live games from the major pro leagues", according to The Verge.

ESPN+ is designed for fanatics who want more sports programing, and for people who can not find their favorite teams or sports on TV, Disney executives said. It's built on BAMTECH Media infrastructure; BAMTECH spun out of MLB's digital business and Disney now controls a majority ownership stake of the company, which was valued at almost $4 billion previous year and powers other streaming services for HBO and the National Hockey League.

Without an ESPN+ subscription, meanwhile, the list of things you get to play with is significantly shorter. Once enrolled, you will be greeted to thousands of programming, but rarely will you find any live sports - something we expect from ESPN. The roster will include MLB, NHL, and MLS games, in addition to Grand Slam tennis, PGA Tour golf, and Top Rank boxing.

Other than this, it will also boast sports-related content, like the new Bobby Knight documentary, as well as the new basketball analysis show coming from Kobe Bryant. For just $4.99 a month, MLS fans can watch hundreds of out-of-market MLS games plus gain access to thousands of other ESPN events, original shows and films - including USL and global soccer. A conventional pay TV subscription is not required for ESPN+. The app will also be available for Apple and Android TVs, Amazon tablets, Amazon Fire TV products, and Google's Chromecast.

Created to supplement its flagship ESPN cable network, ESPN+ is Disney's first effort to attract paying streaming subscribers. Beyond that the appeal is going to be niche sports: minor league baseball, a smattering of college sports, and European soccer leagues you've never heard of. ESPN+ does include MLS Live, however, which is the Sunday Ticket of MLS. Watch anywhere, on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.

Netflix doesn't give you access to every show, but there's always something to watch. The latter includes fans of cricket, rugby, Canadian football or Ivy League sports.
