Night owls face the risk of earlier death‚ study concludes

Research based on 500,000 people found they had a higher chance of death over the six-and-a-half year period they were being studied

Further research into the deaths found that night owls had a 10 percent risk of dying as compared to early morning risers.

"We should discuss allowing evening types to start and finish work later, where practical", he said in the statement.

"It could be that people who are up late have an internal biological clock that doesn't match their external environment", Knutson said in a statement.

Late sleepers and late "wakers" are likelier to die younger than those who rise and set with the Sun, study shows.

In the new study, scientists found owls had higher rates of diabetes, psychological disorders and neurological disorders.

Even more, passing towards the daylight saving time coincides with a higher incidence of heart attacks and for the late risers is more hard to adapt to the change, say the researchers.

A survey of more than 430,000 people in Britain found that night owls had a 10-percent higher risk of dying in the 6.5-year study period than "larks".

Scientists who studied a population of almost half a million Britons found that over a six-year period, night owls had a ten per cent greater risk of death than morning larks.

Larks are better able to adjust their body clocks to the light and dark rhythms of the rising and setting sun, said the researchers.

Being a night owl was associated with psychological stress, eating at the wrong time, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and drug or alcohol use.

Knutson said that "you're not doomed".

Genetics and the environment played roughly equal roles in determining whether you are a night or morning person, said the scientists.

"Part of it you don't have any control over", she said, "part of it you might".

Knutson said that one problem night owls face is living in the morning lark work.

Although the study did not look at the specific causes of death, research has suggested that night owls are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer such as prostate and breast cancer.

The researchers say that employers should adapt work schedules to fit the body clocks of people who struggle to get up in the morning.

"They shouldn't be forced to get up for an 8 a.m. shift".

"We wanted to see whether this translated also into an increased risk of mortality and no one had done that before", said lead author Kristen Knutson, an anthropologist at Northwestern University.

The participants had defined themselves as either "definitely a morning person" (27 percent), "more a morning person than evening person" (35 percent), "more an evening than a morning person" (28 percent), or "definitely an evening person" (nine percent).

For the study, researchers from the University of Surrey and Northwestern University examined the link between an individual's natural inclination toward mornings or evenings and their risk of mortality.
