Russia, Syria blame Israel for deadly raid on airbase

State news agency SANA said that there were'dead and wounded in the strike without giving exact casualty numbers

The UN Security Council planned to hold an emergency meeting Monday to discuss the chemical attack.

Earlier, SANA reported that the US was suspected of launching a missile attack on T-4 military airport in Homs after US President Donald Trump promised a "big price" to be paid for what he said was a chemical weapons attack in the Arab country.

Syrian news agency SANA reported that eight of the missiles fired by Israel were downed but some got through resulting in what one military source said were "martyrs and wounded".

"The attack on the T-4 airbase was conducted to raise the morale of terrorists so that they continue the task of the destruction of Syria entrusted to them", the Syrian general said.

Both Washington and Paris denied carrying out Monday's raid.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday called for a "strong and robust global response" to the attack, after similar calls by Paris and Washington.

Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

The airstrike follows a chemical attack on the town of Damascus in Syria, where poison gas killed at least 60 people by suffocation. The strike took place after a deadly chemical weapons attack on Douma, near Damasus.

In a Monday statement, Qassemi referred to the airstrikes as "Israel's violation of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity".

The base, which was used as a launching pad for counter offensive attacks against Islamic State militants who were at one point stationed close by, is near the Shayrat air base, which was targeted by USA missiles a year ago in response to a chemical weapons attack.

"Our military specialists have visited this place... and they did not find any trace of chlorine or any other chemical substance used against civilians", Lavrov said.

Also, Syria stressed that the Israeli aggression on the T-4 Airport in the countryside of Homs would not have been possible without the United States limitless support.

However a spokesperson from the French Defence Ministry said France did not carry out the latest air strikes.

It sparked a furious response from Mr Trump, who criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin for backing "animal Assad".

Lebanon's National News Agency on Monday said Israeli warplanes were flying near the country's border with Syria.

Thousands of rebels and their families have agreed to leave the town of Douma, the last rebel-held area east of Damascus.

Syria denied it had launched any such attack, a denial which was backed by its ally Russian Federation.

Asked if it was about the airstrike, Bogdanov only said Russian diplomats want to talk about various issues related to the Syrian war, as well as bilateral relations.
