Russian Federation says tracking United States naval movements towards Syria

In response, Russian Federation said a United States military strike against Syria would have "grave repercussions" and stressed that the use of chlorine or sarin had not been confirmed in the Saturday attack.

The meeting's attendees included Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford.

On Monday, the president said he isn't ruling out military action.

The suspected poison gas attack in the Syrian rebel-held town of Douma, just east of Damascus, and Monday's air strike by United States ally Israel have escalated tensions in the already volatile Middle East and raised the threat of possibly imminent American retaliation.

The United States is looking to the UK and France for support as it finalises its response to the assault on the rebel-held town of Douma.

President Trump is scrapping plans to travel this week to a summit in South America because of the situation in Syria, the White House said Tuesday.

Haley and other ambassadors decried what they called the continuing normalization of chemical weapons attacks, citing the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain; the assassination in Malaysia of a half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un; and the continuing attacks in Syria. "To me there's not much of a doubt, but the generals will figure it out, " Mr Trump said.

The PM said the attack in Douma was part of a "troubling wider pattern of acts of aggression" and abuse of worldwide norms on the use of chemical weapons.

Russian Federation however, vetoed the resolution, the 12th such time Moscow has used its veto power at the council to block action targeting its Syrian ally.

Moscow and Damascus have fiercely denied that chemical weapons were used in Syria.

Russian Federation voted for the cease-fire but has repeatedly used its veto power as a permanent member to block any measure that threatens a Syrian offensive against rebels, largely to protect the government of Assad.

Workers said more than 500 people, mostly women and children, were brought to medical centers. "We are very concerned when a thing like that can happen".

The Military Times in December reported that the now-missing Defense Manpower Data Center data showed the US had 26,000 troops total in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria - more than 15,000 troops in Afghanistan, more than 1,700 in Syria, and almost 9,000 in Iraq.

The politician said the Syrian government was expecting a limited strike, similar to the one on Shayrat air base last year, referring to last year's U.S. attack in the central province of Homs following a chemical weapons attack in northern Syria that Washington blamed on the government.

"It was terrible", Trump said Monday.

At least 40 people were reported killed in the suspected attack Saturday.

The UN's top human rights official, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, warned against what he called a "collective shrug" and "impotent" global response to the possible use of chemical weapons in Douma. Haley said. "After all, no civilized government would have anything to do with Assad's murderous regime".

While the USA said it did not attack the Syrian airbase today, the White House is not ruling out a future military response.
