Trump's personal attorney tells ABC News FBI raids were 'respectful' and 'courteous'

FBI agents raided the New York offices of President Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen

The raid, in which agents seized attorney Michael Cohen's records on topics including a US$130,000 payment to a porn actress who alleges she had sex with Trump, left the president more angry than advisers had seen him in weeks, according to five people familiar with the president's views but not authorised to discuss them publicly.

"The decision by the US Attorney's Office in NY to conduct their investigation using search warrants is completely inappropriate and unnecessary", Mr Ryan said in a statement.

"[This raid] resulted in the seizure of protected attorney client communications between a lawyer and his clients", Ryan said.

As news of the raid on his personal attorney unfolded, Trump followed cable news reports, and privately griped about Rosenstein, who also oversees the special counsel investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 campaign.

Cohen has acknowledged facilitating a $130,000 payment in October 2016 to Daniels, who claims she had a sexual relationship with Trump in 2006.

The fraud claims prompted speculation that he may have misled banks over the reason for the large payment, made shortly before the president won the 2016 United States election. To obtain one, agents must convince a judge they have probable cause of criminal activity and they believe they'll find evidence of wrongdoing in a search.

Montoya said the warrant regarding Cohen would have required rigorous scrutiny above and beyond the normal warrant process.

Trump then went on to criticize Mueller over his inquiry.

In this case, Mueller opted to refer the matter to federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

The raid creates a new legal headache for Trump as he and his attorneys weigh whether to agree to an interview with Mueller's team.

Under Justice Department regulations, Mueller must consult with Rosenstein when his investigators uncover new evidence that may fall outside his original mandate.

Neither Cobb nor McGahn responded on Tuesday to requests for comment. Pressed on this claim, she said, "We have been advised that the President certainly has the power to make that decision".

Mr Cohen is under suspicion of bank fraud and election finance violations, said The Washington Post. Whatever the subject matter of this particular investigation, it apparently falls outside of Mueller's jurisdiction and thus resulted in his referral to the NY prosecutors.

"You can actually tell how upset Trump is based on the way he tweets the words "witch hunt, '" Jimmy Kimmel said on Kimmel Live, from late February's "WITCH HUNT!" to Tuesday morning's "TOTAL WITCH HUNT!"

A former senior Federal Bureau of Investigation official told DailyMail.com on Monday that if Cohen meant to help President Trump win the 2016 election when he made the payment, the money could be considered an "in-kind contribution" to his political campaign.

Russian Federation has denied allegations that it interfered in the election, and Mr Trump and the White House have repeatedly said there was no collusion. Cohen has repeatedly said that he gave Daniels a hundred and thirty thousand dollars in hush money, using his own cash.

In his first public comments since the raid, Cohen told CNN on Tuesday that he is rethinking how he handled the payment to Daniels because of what it has done to his family.

Mr. Cohen is "a unique fulcrum point in the Trump universe", said Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas, noting Mr. Cohen's deep involvement both in Mr. Trump's business and his political campaign. In the email, the representative said funds had been deposited in Cohen's account.
