Uber's new transit plan: electric bikes, rental cars and subway fares

Cars will come through car-booking service Getaround, which lets private vehicle owners rent their cars out to others.

Uber Bike: In a co-venture with JUMP Bikes, Uber has added a dockless electric bicycle sharing system to its app lineup.

For mass transit, the San Francisco startup said it would allow app users to see various options and would launch a partnership with e-ticketing service Masabi that would eventually allow the Uber app to be used instead of tickets or passes.

Jahan Khanna, head of product, mobility at Uber, said: "Having a greater variety of transportation modes at your fingertips helps make it increasingly easy to live without a vehicle".

"We're going beyond cars".

Masabi has partnerships with transit systems in Boston, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and NY, as well as train and transit operators in Europe.

Uber will begin offering peer-to-peer auto rentals in San Francisco later this month.

Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi presented the plans during a visit to Washington, where he said the ride-hailing pioneer would seek a more diversified model offering various transport options, including auto rentals on a partner peer-to-peer service.

The nine companies the ride-sharing firm signed deals with are the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), MP Shah Hospital, an emergency services firm Flare, the auto dealer Toyotsu, Huawei, Techno, Essilor, Kingsway, and Telkom Kenya. Jump CEO Ryan Rzepecki said the collaboration, known as Uber Bike, will help Jump "be part of a multi-global platform that includes car-share, public transit, biking and shared rides". The program will be piloted in DC alongside the District Department of Transportation and the Department of For-Hire Vehicles. Meghan Joyce, Uber's Regional General Manager for the United States and Canada, said it will help cities "better do curbside planning and ensure everyone who needs to use the curbside is doing so in a safe, responsible and easy way".

With millions of GPS-tracked trips comes some fascinating data about how the city moves at different times of the day, week and year. "We want to be part of the solution". "And in order to do that, we need to give back to the cities and public agencies that govern the communities in which we operate".
