An outbreak of E. coli infections has stretched across several states, prompting an investigation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak has sicked 17 people across seven states, including two people in CT.
"CDC is not recommending that consumers avoid any particular food at this time", the organization's notice said. There have been six people hospitalized, including one for a form of kidney failure, but no deaths, the CDC says. Until they can figure out just what is causing the mass food poisoning, "restaurants and retailers are not advised to avoid serving or selling any particular food".
The illnesses are said to have started on dates ranging from March 22 to March 31 in people ranging in age from 12 to 84 years.
States affected are New Jersey (6 cases), Idaho (4 cases), CT (2 cases), Pennsylvania (2 cases), Missouri (1 case), Washington (1 case) and OH (1 case).
It is still early in the investigation and no specific source of the infection has been identified so far. Despite the fact that 7 U.S. states have been affected by E. Coli, so far, only New Jersey seems to concentrate most of the cases with 6 confirmed E. Coil infections.
MLive sister-publication NJ.com reports that Panera Bread could be linked to E. coli infections in four counties with eight people falling ill.
The outbreak began in late March.
Wash hands after using the restroom or changing diapers, before and after preparing or eating food, and after contact with animals.
"Some people may not be included in CDC's case count because no bacterial isolates are available for the DNA fingerprinting needed to link them to the outbreak".
Cook meats thoroughly to kill harmful germs. This can be due to ingestion of contaminated food and water or poor hygiene.
