Guterres Calls On the Security Council Common Position on Syria

U.N. Security Council members meet about the suspected chemical attacks in Douma Syria at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that the "impasse" in the Security Council on Syria could cause the situation to spiral out of control amid threats of a U.S. military strike against the Arab country.

The UN Security Council has been unable to reach agreement over Syria.

He cited the Palestinian-Israeli divide, the Sunni-Shia divide "evident from the Gulf to the Mediterranean" and other divisive factors reflected in a multiplicity of conflicts.

A war of words has erupted between Washington and Moscow over the issue, with US President Donald Trump and his allies in the West threatening to take military action against Syria.

The UN's secretary general has said the Middle East is "in chaos" and the Cold War is "back with a vengeance".

The Security Council was holding a meeting on the situation in Syria at the request of Russian Federation.

While making the case for military action, the United States envoy cautioned that "you don't rush decisions like this".

"This is exactly the risk we face today - that things spiral out of control", said the United Nations chief.

Guterres urged the Security Council to "act responsibly in these unsafe circumstances", according to AFP.

"All nations and all people will be harmed if we allow Assad to normalise the use of chemical weapons", Haley said.

Trump posted a fiery tweet earlier on Wednesday, in which he warned Russian Federation - one of Syria's key supporters in the war against foreign-backed militancy - that it should get prepared to "shoot down" missiles that the United States military would soon rain down over Syrian targets.

The highest representative of the United Nations has expressed great concern about reports indicating the use of chemical weapons in Syria. "It will be in defense of a bedrock worldwide norm that benefits all nations.the United States estimates that Assad has used chemical weapons in the Syrian war at least 50 times".

By "deciding once again to use chemical weapons" in the rebel-held town of Douma, "the regime has reached a point of no-return", Delattre said.
