Hornets Relieve Steve Clifford Of Head Coaching Duties

Hornets fire coach Steve Clifford

The Charlotte Hornets have fired heave coach Steve Clifford, a native of ME, after the team failed to reach the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons.

Clifford was let go following a meeting with new general manager Mitch Kupchak, who made the announcement. He acknowledged that the Hornets "didn't make good progress" this year. Clifford leaves the Hornets with a career coaching record of 196-214, and is expected to field other job offers from teams in the market for a new head coach.

Clifford, 56, has recovered from a several-week bout of headaches and insomnia that caused him to take a leave of absence this season.
