Trump says missiles 'will be coming' to Syria

Rebuffing Russian warnings against USA military strikes in Syria, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" in response to Syria's suspected chemical attack that killed at least 40 people.

The White House announcement came after May held an emergency cabinet meeting on the situation in Syria, where dozens of people were killed last weekend in a suspected toxic gas attack on Douma, the largest town in a former rebel stronghold outside Damascus.

The Syrian government had denied the allegations and said the rebels fabricated the chemical attack to provide a pretext for the USA and its western allies to launch a military strike on Syria.

It's a nightmare scenario for Syria: The United States launches strikes on Syrian targets, killing Russians, and Moscow is forced to defend itself or retaliate. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'", Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he had spoken to Trump on Wednesday and would speak to Putin on Thursday night about the chemical attack.

Sanders said Trump would speak later with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May. That strike did not appear to have had the desired effect of deterring Assad from further use of chemical agents.

Her strong remarks came as the United States is banging the drums of war on Syria over allegations of a chemical attack on rebels in eastern Ghouta. "But on a strategic level, it's how do we keep this from escalating out of control, if you get my drift on that", Mattis said in morning testimony before the House Armed Services Committee.

Russian Federation and the United States blocked attempts by each other in the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to set up global investigations into chemical weapons attacks in Syria. The president is also speaking with allies in Great Britain and France about a possible coordinated effort, though German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday her country would not participate in possible military action in Syria.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Russian Federation hopes all parties involved in Syria will avoid any steps that could "significantly destabilize" an already "fragile situation".

Mrs May and President Trump spoke hours after this meeting and reiterated the use of chemical weapons should not be tolerated.

"We have the proof that chemical weapons - at least chlorine gas - were used by Assad's regime", Macron told France's TF1 television.

"We should all be outraged at these horrific reports and images from Douma", said Peter Salama, WHO's deputy director-general for emergency preparedness and response.

Russia, Syria and its other main backer, Iran, have said reports of the Douma attack were fabricated by rebels and rescue workers and have accused the United States of seeking to use it as a pretext to attack the Syrian government. Russia's ambassador to Lebanon said any missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and the launching sites targeted - a stark warning of a potential major confrontation.

The Eurocontrol airspace organization said that the European Aviation Safety Agency had sent a "Rapid Alert Notification" that flight operators needed to consider the possibility of air or missile strikes into Syria.

Syrian troops pushed the last rebel fighters out of Douma on Thursday, Major-General Yury Yevtushenko, head of Russia's Centre for Syrian Reconciliation, told local news media.

In his tweet about timing, Trump also claimed success in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and elsewhere, but said he was not getting enough credit. It was not immediately clear whether that visit would delay or avert US or allied military action.
