Abbott Sending Up To 1400 National Guard Troops To Border

Governor Abbott Visits National Guard Troops Deployed To Border

The main objective is to provide support for the Department of Homeland Security's mission to secure the U.S. -Mexico border, with a mission end-date of September 30. The deployment of National Guard members to the U.S. -Mexico border at President Trump's request was underway Tuesday with a gradual ramp-up of troops under orders to help curb illegal immigration.

"It's also not a permanent solution".

He said, "There has been an increase of more than 200% of people coming across the border without authority". It says troops can not guard anyone in custody for immigration violations or participate in construction of border barriers.

Gov. Abbott reminded the troops of their mission: to assist the Border Patrol by being their eyes and ears at the border.

"There is no militarization of the border", Ducey said in front of a half-dozen rows of National Guard troops dressed in fatigues standing alongside Border Patrol agents. If Trump wants to help fund that, we welcome federal support.

"As a veteran and a child of immigrants, I can not understand why President Trump feels the need to deploy troops along our southern border".

On April 12 he said this move was necessary. "And the California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws". Had the governor fought the president, California might have lost the ability to ensure those Guard members are used constructively. New Mexico has also expressed support for Trump's plan.

"If he's in disagreement with Donald Trump about the justifications for having the National Guard on the border, then why would he accept it?" he said.

But the governor needs to choose wisely in his battles with the federal government, and there was ample precedent for agreeing to the general terms of Trump's call for additional border patrols.

"Here are the facts: there is no massive wave of migrants pouring into California", Brown wrote the Trump Cabinet members. "But we are not doing so at the sole exclusion of other immigration violators", Matthew T. Albence, of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said.

Under the agreement, which expires at the end of September, the state will use most of the additional federal funding for an existing program to combat transnational crime and will deploy numerous additional Guard members statewide rather than at the border. About 250 California National Guard troops are already participating, including 55 at the border.

Brown said California's troops would join an existing program to combat transnational drug crime, firearms smuggling and human trafficking. "That's why the state and the Guard have long supported this important work and agreed to similar targeted assistance in 2006 under President Bush and in 2010 under President Obama".
