Bill Cosby's defense says 'so-called victim' was after comedian's money

Former model Janice Dickinson is one of the new witnesses who claims Bill Cosby knocked her out with a pill and raped her in Lake Tahoe in 1982 when she was 27 and Cosby was 45

She was expected to face intense cross-examination by a defense team intent on portraying her as a "con artist" who framed him for money. That night, he offered her the three blue pills, saying they were her "friends".

Thomas is rejecting a defense lawyer's suggestion she was seeking a share of the spotlight and trying to profit off her experiences.

Bill Cosby's retrial is now underway in a Pennsylvania courtroom, where the comedian stands accused of drugging and molesting a woman at his home in 2004. He says their encounter was consensual.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.

Bill Cosby departs after his sexual assault trial, Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pa.

In her testimony Friday, Constand denied ever having intimate contact with Cosby prior to the alleged assault at his home.

On two occasions, she said he also touched her in ways that indicated he was interested in her romantically, once trying to unbutton her trousers.

Turning to Cosby, she made the remark that suggested he remembered the encounter. Only one additional accuser took the stand at the first trial.

Lasha is the second of five additional accusers expected to testify at Cosby's sexual assault retrial in suburban Philadelphia.

She said her opinion of Cosby drastically changed around 2015 when a cavalcade of women began coming forward to publicly accuse the man once known as "America's Dad" of drugging and sexually assaulting them.

Another accuser, taking the witness stand after Dickinson, said Cosby prodded her to drink two shots in his Las Vegas hotel suite, then had her sit between his knees and started petting her head.

Cosby lawyer Tom Mesereau is poring over inconsistencies in Constand's statements to police about the alleged assault.

Cosby's representative, Marty Singer, later called and left a message, which was recorded, offering to set up an educational trust for Constand. Constand sued him in civil court back in 2005 and, according to The New York Times, the details of that suit were not revealed during the first criminal trial, but a judge ruled the settlement details could be mentioned in the current trial. "You're going to be wondering: What did she want from Bill Cosby?"

In that respect, Constand was similar to other women who have accused Cosby of sexual assault over the years.

He predicted that, when the jury hears Constand's testimony in full, they will ultimately find Cosby not guilty of these crimes.

Cosby's attorneys are expected to cross-examine Constand, including about the almost $3.4 million settlement she received.

Women who say comedian Bill Cosby knocked them out with intoxicants and sexually assaulted them decades ago are finally getting a chance to confront him - and they aren't holding back.

Before Constand took the stand on Friday, Cosby's publicist Andrew Wyatt had some not-so-kind words for both the prosecution and Constand on the steps of the courthouse while the comedian stood by his side.

Dickinson testified she got to know Cosby after he called her agent and said he wanted to meet and possibly mentor her as she looked to expand her career into singing and acting.

Instead, Constand said, the pills instead made her black out.

Sobs wracking her body, Lasha testified the next thing she remembers is Cosby's face above hers, and him clapping his hands inches from her nose. She strongly maintains her claim that she was assaulted by Cosby, responding, "They weren't there!"

Bill Cosby's defense attorney in opening statements Tuesday described Andrea Constand as a "so-called victim" who was really a con artist after his client's money.

Constand's possible financial motives played a role in Cosby's original trial, which ended with a hung jury last June.

Mesereau urged jurors to ignore the other accusers, calling them irrelevant to this case.

Constand stiffed roommates on utility bills, racked up big credit card bills and operated a Ponzi scheme while running women's basketball operations at Temple University, where Cosby was an alumnus and trustee, Mesereau said. She ripped Cosby's team for trashing her reputation in the courtroom, where lawyers are immune from defamation lawsuits, and in statements to the media. The 80-year-old comedian is charged with drugging and molesting a woman in 2004.
