Ex-USC quarterback Mark Sanchez suspended 4 games by NFL

USA TODAY Sports

He is now a free agent.

Former Jets quarterback and current free agent Mark Sanchez was suspended four games for the 2018 season after violating the league's PED policy, the league announced on Friday.

Sanchez was the Jets first-round draft pick in 2009 and took the team to two consecutive AFC Championships but has been relegated to a backup since leaving NY after the 2012 season. He says he has been "subject to 73 drug tests" and "all but one have been clean".

In a longer statement sent to ESPN's Josina Anderson, Sanchez elaborated that the positive test was "the result of incidental and isolated exposure to a banned substance". I have taken the same regimen of supplements for the past five years without any issues.

The 31-year-old quarterback was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 National Football League draft and helped lead the Jets to the AFC championship game during his first two seasons.

Sanchez blamed the positive test on an "unknowing supplement contamination".

Sanchez never played like the franchise quarterback the Jets envisioned when they selected him with their No. 1 overall pick in 2009. He has been mostly a backup since being released by NY after the 2013 season, starting just 10 games over the last four years. His last start was in 2015 with the Philadelphia Eagles and his last win as a starter with with the Eagles in 2014. He was a starter for NY from 2009-12 and established career bests of 3,474 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2011.
