Facebook stops funding campaign against United States consumers' privacy

The 9% figure seems impossibly high as it would mean that of Facebook's estimated 214 million users in the United States, 19.2 million deleted their account over the past few weeks alone.

That's alarming, given that we have been discussing this element of Facebook's non-user data collection for the past five years, ever since the practice was brought to light by researchers at Packet Storm Security. Jon Tester said to Zuckerberg, "You said multiple times during this hearing that I own the data".

Zuckerberg has apologised for his company's role in the data scandal saying: "We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake". There were dozens of unanswered or follow-up questions that the executive promised his team would respond to later, and some of his talking points aren't likely to hold up to future analysis. That line nearly worked, until Reps.

Zuckerberg said user ownership of content is fundamental to the website.

Larger, more dominant companies like Facebook have the resources to comply with government regulation, he said, but "that might be more hard for a smaller startup to comply with".

Zuckerberg: I do not know off the top of my head. "Some of the questions asked of Mark Zuckerberg didn't suggest to me a level of understanding of the nuance of privacy by some of the senators".

"I started Facebook, I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here". Orrin Hatch, a senator from Utah, even asked Zuckerberg how Facebook's business model works given that it is free. Such a system might have the potential to block bad posts before they spread, without humans needing to make subjective decisions in individual cases.

The interesting question, however, is whether Facebook itself plans to make use of this, and here Mr Zuckerberg was less than entirely candid or open. He also said that the firm will be increasing resources to investigate apps and take appropriate actions.

If Zuckerberg doesn't want to talk about this issue in front of lawmakers, it may be because he fears regulation that would curb Facebook's ability to track data on third-party sites.

Facebook's defense: A Facebook spokesperson had this to say about the story: "Facebook, just like many other ad platforms, uses machine learning to show the right ad to the right person".

We need government oversight.

To get there, many Congressmen and Congresswomen have some studying to do.

Kogan built a personality quiz app on Facebook that captured data on Facebook (fb) users and then sold the information to Cambridge Anlaytica, which violated the company's terms and policies. It doesn't. But it does trade off user data. John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, said in the hearing Tuesday.

"We are working to advocate technology", Parakilas said, "that aligns with humanity's best interest".

"You... know how I feel about racial diversity in corporate America", digressed G.K. Butterfield [D], calling on Zuck to improve industrywide racial inclusion.
